Talk:ISOLINUX

The instructions on this page say to copy the file 'isolinux.bin' into a directory under the root of the ISO file tree, and then specify the path to it in the mkisofs command line. They do not, however, say anything about where this file is supposed to come from in the first place.

I have six different versions of this file, obtained from various sources. All of them are black boxes to me; each of them works for the context from which I obtained it, but I have no idea whether or not it is in any way specific to that context. Nothing I have been able to find explains what is supposed to generate the isolinux.bin file, nor even exactly what purpose it serves. I have gathered the impression from some of the projects which I have found which use it that it may be important to be able to customize the file, but that is obviously not possible for a binary format without being able to generate it.

Since this is the ISOLINUX origin and center point, I would expect that the information would be found here, but it is not. Could someone who is closely enough involved with the project to know explain how the isolinux.bin file is created, what purpose it serves in the process, and what benefit if any there might be to choosing one version over another? -- Identity 06:33, 24 September 2008 (PDT)
