No native BIOS support

generic method

There is a third party bootmanger called PLoP Boot Manager. It offers some support for booting CD-ROM and USB even with no native BIOS support.

PLoP Boot Manager can be installed either on floppy, harddisk, CD or USB.

It`s free in price but I can`t find anything on their site about licensing and source code. Still interesting project.

CD-ROM

There is currently no generic way to chain load a bootsector on CD-ROM if the BIOS of the motherboard has no option to boot from CD-ROM itself. However, for ATAPI CD-ROMs, the Smart Boot Manager can be used to boot.

Previous versions of Microsoft Windows did offer bootdisks (boot from bootdisk with CD driver, then change device and run setup).

However, some Linux distros offer boot floppy to CD boot.

USB

There is currently no generic way to chain load a bootsector on usb if the bios of the motherboard has no option to boot from USB itself. (If this is wrong then correct this please.)

However, some Linux distros offer Linux to USB boot floppies.
